An app for parents and carers · iPhone and iPad

Agree calmly.
Draw fairly.

Well Grounded helps you and your child agree fair consequences and good surprises on a calm day. So a hard moment is never decided in anger, and the good days fill a jar.

One child free, with everything that keeps it safe and fair. Plus is optional; prices are shown in the App Store.

01

How it works

Decide on a calm day, not in the heat of the moment.

Three steps, the same every time. Your child is part of each one.

  1. Step 1: Agree calmly

At a calm sit-down you choose cards together, and your child answers each one. The cards they agree to are kept, as Zara’s cards.

  2. Step 2: Draw fairly

When something happens, the app picks one of those cards. Your child chooses how it’s revealed.

  3. Step 3: Good days count

Good choices add crystals to their jar and stickers to their book.

Most days, nothing happens. That’s the point. Home never ranks one child against another.

02

Try it here

Good days count. Here’s Zara’s jar.

Good moments add crystals to your child’s own jar, to spend on rewards you choose together or save for something bigger. This one is a sample to play with.

Where crystals come from

  • a good surprise
  • fixing it
  • earning a card back
  • taking a card calmly
  • a welcome crystal
  • a sorry crystal
  • something another grown-up noticed, if you choose

Crystals and stickers are never taken away. There are no streaks.

  • Fair because

The price of what she’s saving for can’t go up while she saves.

  • Safe because

Sound stays off here unless you turn it on. In the app it follows the silent switch.

  • Stickers stuck on a page of Zara's sticker book.

    The sticker book

Each good moment gives a sticker to peel off and stick anywhere on the page. Big foil stickers arrive at 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200.

Progress shows as dots, never a bar or a percentage.

  • Bonus goals, part of Plus

Agree what each good thing earns, and a bonus to aim for: “2 of 3 towards a 🏆”.

    Counts only go up.

  • Zara's rewards, priced in crystals.

    Spend or save

Your family’s own rewards, priced in crystals. “A grown-up says yes first.” If a treat can’t happen, Give back returns the crystals. One reward is free; more rewards come with Plus.

Rewards are never bought: they’re your family’s own.

03

The sit-down · Sunday, 4.00 pm

Nothing goes in unless you both say yes.

Choose ready-made actions and cards for your child’s age, or write your own. Your child reads each card and answers.

  • Your child signs with a finger, or says “Agreed” out loud if you turn that on. The phone checks the word, never the voice.

  • If there’s a second grown-up, they agree too. Cards show “1 of 2 grown-ups” until they do.

  • The first signed cards drop a welcome crystal in the jar.

Some limits are built in, whatever anyone agrees. The rules nobody can switch off.

Zara signs the cards she agreed, with her finger.
Going through Big feelings together: for each action, Zara can say yes to all of its cards, look at them first, or leave it out.

Throwing things when I'm cross

No TV

1 hour

Zara, is this fair?

A sample card. Nothing here is saved or sent.

More at the sit-down
  • Cards end “After a set time” or “When it’s fixed”.
  • Earning it back: a fix-it agreed now, so it’s fair later.
  • A card for new things: “The app never makes up a consequence. This is the only card it can use for something new, and then it goes on the list for your next sit-down.”
  • Your child’s wishes, like “A trip to the zoo”, come back as ideas for good surprises.
  • Signatures last a year. Then you sit down and agree again.
  • “Make the Pact for the fridge”: every signed card to print, a page for each child, headed “Zara and their grown-ups agreed this”. It never includes history.
  • Ready-made ideas also come in Action packs, such as Sport and clubs, or Brothers and sisters. Adding a pack only adds ideas; every card is still agreed and signed.
04

A hard moment · Tuesday, 6.40 pm

Your child chooses how. The card is already picked.

You never pick a punishment while you’re cross. The app picks from cards your child has seen and agreed to, and your child chooses how it’s revealed. The same toys work for good surprises too.

How shall we draw it, Zara?

You choose. The card is already picked fairly.

Choose a way

Try another way. The card stays the same: it was picked fairly, from Zara’s signed cards, before the toy moved. The same card comes up for ten minutes, so there’s no drawing again.

Nothing is staked or bought. No coins, no odds.

Try the wheel.

Spin a wheel is one of the toys. Drag it or flick it, the way your child would.

Your turn to spin

Drag the wheel or flick it. Flick faster to spin faster.

In the app, the card is picked fairly before the wheel moves. Your child chooses how it’s revealed. These are example cards from the app’s library; in the app the wheel holds cards your child has seen and agreed to.

The phone turned sideways, with Zara's side and what Mum saw side by side.
Zara’s side and what Mum saw, side by side on one screen.

Fair both ways

If you got it wrong, you can say so.

Your child can say “That’s not what happened” and record or type their side. You settle it together at the sit-down.

“I got that wrong. Sorry, Zara.”

If it didn’t happen, the card is undone and a sorry crystal goes in Zara’s jar.

A kind lock, not a locked door. With the parent lock on, only a grown-up starts a draw, ends a card, or hands out and spends crystals. Your child never sees “locked”, just a calm “With a grown-up”.

More about drawing and settling

Calm tools for the moment itself

  • Breathe with Pip

An optional breath before anything is drawn. “You’re not choosing anything, just calming down.”

  • Face to face

Lay the phone flat on the table. The card turns to face your child while the words face you. The movement is read live and never stored.

  • Quiet mode

For public places: no sounds or vibrations, and your child still chooses how to draw.

Before a draw: "Throwing things when I'm cross. You signed 3 cards for this." with Sign now, That's not what happened, and I need a minute.
Zara sees her own words first. She signs to draw.
  • “I need a minute”: your child can ask for a pause. “Say only this” gives you one calm line to say.
  • Earn it back: a fix-it checklist your child ticks off to end a card early.
  • The words change with age, from “Yes, that happened” for the youngest to “That’s fair” or “I see it differently” for teenagers.
  • Brothers and sisters each draw from their own cards. “Nobody shares a card.”
  • Changed your mind? Undo straight after a draw, or choose “Let it go this time”, which is kept in the history.
  • When a timed card ends: “Did Zara take it calmly?” If yes, a crystal.
  • A running card can show as a Live Activity. Names and the card’s words appear there only if you turn on “Show the card on the Lock Screen”.
  • Private because

Every not so good draw tells your child, in words for their age, that only their grown-ups can see their cards.

How a disagreement is settled

  1. 01

Before drawing over a disagreement, the grown-up says what they saw.

  2. 02

Your child’s side is optional: a short voice note (tap Record, tap again to stop) or typed.

  3. 03

You choose: draw anyway, ask again, or talk about it at the next sit-down.

  4. 04

At the sit-down: “It happened”, “It didn’t happen”, or “We see it differently”.

Either way, the history keeps that your child disagreed. Their voice and typed notes are deleted once it’s settled.

  • Private because

Voice notes are kept out of iCloud and computer backups, and deleted when the sit-down settles it, or after 14 days.

  • Private because

An optional photo of what happened is off by default, uses the camera only, and faces are blurred on the phone before it’s kept.

  • Private because

A recording stops when you tap again, or at the limit you choose in Settings: 30 seconds, 1 minute (the default) or 2 minutes.

For grown-ups: the lock, This week, packs, codes and tips

The parent lock

Face ID, Touch ID, your passcode, or a parent PIN for families where a child knows the passcode. It’s on from setup on phones that can check, and it asks once per draw. If nobody’s there: “This one starts with a grown-up. Ask them to come and do it with you.” Looking at the jar, the sticker book or the history never asks.

A kind card with Pip: "This one starts with a grown-up. Ask them to come and do it with you."

This week, part of Plus

Good against not so good, seven days side by side, and what’s worth a sit-down.

‘Throwing things’ came up 3 times this week. Is there a better card, or something that would help before it happens?

From here you can make a summary for a professional: a PDF about one child, with counts and patterns, and no photos, voices or signatures. This week and the summary are part of Plus; the history of every draw is free.

A summary helps you talk with a professional. It doesn’t replace one.

This week for Zara: a ring of good against not so good, the week day by day, and when it's not so good.
  • Action packs

Start from ideas for real life.

    • Sport and clubs
    • Screens and gaming
    • Homework and school
    • Chores and pocket money
    • Brothers and sisters

Share your own as a file, or add one someone sends you. Family names the app knows are swapped out, lines with phone numbers, emails or links are left out, and you see what was removed. Adding a pack only adds ideas: every card is still agreed and signed.

    Free.

  • Send with a code

    Hear what other grown-ups noticed.

    1. 1You make a code for one child
    2. 2A teacher, co-parent, guardian or club leader sends what they noticed, sealed to your phone
    3. 3You read it first, and nothing changes until you choose

One way only. No chat, no server, and children can’t send. Other children’s names are replaced as far as the app can tell, and both grown-ups see the exact words first.

    Free.

  • Tips from many traditions

A short tip each day, from the traditions you choose.

    • Buddhist teachings
    • The Bible
    • Hindu texts
    • The Qur’an
    • Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad
    • Ali ibn Abi Talib
    • Companions of the Prophet
    • Jewish wisdom
    • Sikh teachings
    • Confucian classics
    • Taoist classics
    • Modern thinkers on childhood
    • Great lives

Any mix, or none. Tap ⓘ for the exact words, where they come from and the translation. Built into the app: nothing is fetched, and nothing approving physical punishment, fear or shaming is included.

Up to three sources free; all at once with Plus.

  • Private because

A code is for one child and opens only on the phone that made it.

  • Safe because

With the parent lock on, children can’t send, and nothing another grown-up sends changes anything until you choose.

  • Fair because

Tips from every tradition are shown the same way.

Fair by design

The limits nobody can switch off.

Some things are built into the app, so fairness doesn’t depend on anyone’s mood on a hard day. Including ours.

The rules Well Grounded keeps, and what they mean
Three signed cards firstA not so good action needs three cards your child signed before anything can be drawn. A good one needs one.
Limits by ageThe longest a card can last: two hours under 7, overnight from 7 to 10, a day from 11.
What cards never touchFood, sleep, touch, affection, being left alone or time with family.
Faith and festivalsWorship is never a consequence. Festivals, birthdays and gifts are never taken away.
About what happenedEvery line describes what happened, never who your child is.
Nothing inventedOne gentle card covers something new, and it goes on the list for your next sit-down.
No drawing againThe same card comes up for ten minutes.
Every card the same chanceThe card is picked evenly from the signed ones, before the toy moves.
Kept, not lostCrystals and stickers are never taken away. There are no streaks.
Plus stays with grown-upsPlus is only ever offered to a grown-up, never on your child’s screen.

Well Grounded is a tool for calm family agreements. It isn’t a replacement for professional support when a child needs it.

06

Privacy

Private by design. Stated plainly.

No accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Everything stays on your iPhone or iPad, and in its own backup, unless you choose to share it.

What the app keeps

  • First names and birth years, and a photo only if you add one.
  • Signatures, and “I agree” recordings if you turn them on.
  • Cards and history on your device, for as long as you choose. A year is the default.
  • Voice notes only while a question is open, never in backups.

What it never does

  • No accounts or sign-in.
  • No ads, analytics, tracking or third-party code.
  • No network requests of its own.
  • No names in Siri phrases, or on the Lock Screen and widgets unless you turn them on.

What you control

  • Delete everything, whenever you like.
  • Encrypted backups with your own passphrase.
  • Motion is read live and never stored.

Looking out for your child.

Where anyone types, a guard refuses common health, learning-needs and safeguarding words. A child who types a worry about their safety is thanked and pointed to a trusted grown-up. Nothing is sent.

08

Questions

Questions parents ask.

Is this a punishment app?

No. It’s a way to agree fair consequences and good surprises together, before they’re needed. Good moments, crystals and stickers are part of every day in it, and a hard moment is never decided in anger.

Does my child need an account?

No. There are no accounts at all. Setting up asks what your child calls you, and your child’s first name and birth year. Nothing else.

Can a card come up that my child didn’t agree to?

No. The app picks from cards your child has seen and agreed to. For something new there’s one gentle card, and the action goes on the list for your next sit-down.

Is drawing a card like gambling?

No. Nothing is staked or bought. The card is picked first, evenly, from cards your child has seen and agreed to; the toy only reveals it.

What if my child says it didn’t happen?

They can say “That’s not what happened” and record or type their side. You say what you saw before anything is drawn, and you settle it together at the sit-down. If it didn’t happen, the card is undone and a sorry crystal goes in their jar.

Can my child use it on their own?

They can look at their jar, sticker book and cards. With the parent lock on, only a grown-up starts a draw, ends a card, or hands out and spends crystals.

Does anything leave my phone?

No accounts, ads, analytics or tracking. Things leave only when you choose, such as a backup you make or something you send with a code. More in the privacy policy.

What ages is it for?

Families with children from about 2 to 17. The words and the longest a card can last change as your child grows.

Do I need Plus?

No. One child, with everything, is free. Plus adds room for more children and a few extras. When it ends, nothing is deleted or hidden; new draws for extra children need Plus again.

What is Teacher mode?

Part of Plus. Groups become classes, the PIN is asked every time, and recordings, photos, Say “Agreed”, Lock Screen details and the tip of the day are off. Nothing is sent to us. A teacher can send a child’s moments home only with a code that child’s parent made.

Where can I get help?

The support page covers getting started, the parent lock (including a forgotten PIN), moving to a new phone and Plus.
